CAMPBELL AT COBBLE HALL
The 2005 U.S Open and World Match Play Championship winner Michael Campbell made a surprise visit to Leeds Golf Club “Cobble Hall” on Saturday 10th August.
As a friend of Leeds Golf Club member Andrew Thirkill, Michael was invited to play 18 holes on what was a very wet and windy afternoon.
The challenging British Summer conditions did not affect Campbell too adversely as he carded a 65 for the par 69 round.
On a course which is ‘better for knowing’ his drive and 9 iron and drive and 7 iron, two blind approaches on the two par 5’s, saw him just to the side of the green and were it not for his exhibition shot on the 172yd 18th with a wedge which saw him bunkered greenside, the round would have been even better!!!
Thirkill commented “When I knew Michael was coming to the UK I wanted to bring him to Leeds Golf Club as the Home of the Leeds Cup – the oldest trophy in Professional Golf and I was delighted when he agreed to do so, he was really impressed with the course”.
Campbell then went on to caddy for Thirkill in a competition the next day at Moortown GC!
