Alnmouth Golf Club

Although the course has a coastal location it has parkland turf and a reputation for the fine quality of the greens and superb presentation. Recently chosen as one of the TOP 100 HIDDEN GEM golf courses in the UK.

We are a private members club with active Mens and Ladies sections, friendly clubhouse atmosphere and very strong junior section. Foxton Hall is a collection of rambling buildings but the clubhouse occupies the main building which oozes with character and the traditions of the game of golf. A special feature of “Foxton”, as we are generally known, is a 26-bed Dormy House within the clubhouse offering hotel accommodation, English Tourism 3 Star rating, to groups of visiting golfers in very comfortable twin or single rooms with en suite facilities. Visitors are always given a warm Northumbrian welcome at Alnmouth where we have buggies for hire and first class practice facilities.

Alnmouth Golf Club - Established 1869 the fourth oldest golf club in England.

In August, 1869 Captain Arthur Walker, on behalf of a number of others, issued a notice to probable members about the forming of a golf club in Alnmouth. It is believed that the course in Alnmouth village was designed and created by Mungo Park, a youngish man at the time, who was to become a famous golf professional and the Club's first professional. The first Annual Meeting of the Club is recorded as taking place in October of the same year, according to the notice, a copy of which is held at the Club. The first competition for the Percy Medal was played in the Autumn of 1869 on the 19th of October, resulting in a win for Captain Walker, the secretary, with a score of 81. The notice for the Autumn meeting also mentions a silver Challenge Cross, presented by a member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, a Mr. Charles Walker. The first winner of this medal was the Revd. A. Medd with a score of 119 strokes for 18 holes. There is no record, however, to say when this medal round was played. It may have been a second day's competition at the October meeting or played for later in the year.

The Course

Situated half a mile to the north of the village of Alnmouth and only ten minutes drive from the main A1 link road, Alnmouth Golf Club is easily accessed. The Club has a long and distinguished history and is proud of its heritage as the fourth oldest course in England, being established in 1869.

The existing course was created in 1930 by the famous golf course architect H.S.Colt, providing a testing and enjoyable challenge to this day using his trademark steep slopes and run off areas to protect the greens. Although the course has a coastal location it has parkland turf and a reputation for the quality of its greens and excellent presentation.

This left the original nine holes intact for what is now known as the Alnmouth Village Golf Club or near neighbours. We retain a strong link with our sister Club, and hold joint competitions annually to celebrate our common golfing heritage. Our course is a fine test of golf , 6525 yards long, par 71 for the men, 5752yards, par 74 for the ladies and has hosted National and County events. Its subtle difficulties are offset by the wonderful variety of scenery, ranging from seashore to headland, with a breathtaking, panoramic view from the 15th green over many miles of the Northumberland coastline. The course is rich in wildlife and is always a joy to play. Buggies are available for hire to enhance your enjoyment.

Alnmouth also has wonderful practice facilities within easy reach of the clubhouse. There is an expansive practice area with artificial turf for all weather practice and a ball dispenser. The area includes yardage markers, targets and nets as well as an additional dedicated short game practice area. There is also a brilliant 4 hole par 3 course to sharpen your short game. In addition to these facilities there are two practice putting greens, one surrounded by a rose garden, a chipping green and two driving nets situated close to the 1st tee.
