About the club
Bolton Old Links has its roots way back in 1891,125 years ago this year, when a merry band of very keen golfers laid out a nine hole course on the moors of Smithills Bolton. In 1911, after a few ‘altercations’ with the land owner, who was rather more interested in the hay crop than the golf being played, a large group of the Membership decided to seek land elsewhere. Other Members wanted to stay and sort out the problems, so the Club agreed on amicable terms to split into two, some staying put to form the ‘Old Links GC’ and others securing a site at Lostock Park to form another Golf Club, now known as ‘Bolton Lostock GC’.
Dr Alister MacKenzie
In 1924 the land problems were resolved and further land obtained; the Club then approached the foremost Golf Course Designer of the day Dr. Alister MacKenzie to develop the land into a formidable golf course, utilizing the natural contours and undulating terrain by astute bunkering, as was his style.
Dr. MacKenzie was also responsible for introducing the two tier green into course design and is renowned the world over for many stunning courses. We’re proud to say that his involvement with our course allows us membership of the Dr. Alister MacKenzie Society of Britain and Northern Ireland.
Stunning Views
As the Second World War raged the German Luftwaffe also added a few contours of their own, which thankfully compliment Dr. MacKenzie’s and resulted in the colourful and testing layout we play today.
The ‘Links’ are laid out in two loops of nine and take into account each direction of the compass, ensuring whichever hole is being played the wind will have some bearing on club selection. The highest point of the Course (12th tee) is approx 830ft above sea level, the elevation providing stunning views of all the surrounding Counties.
