“It must be over 20 years ago and my wife and I were travelling in Europe. I had brought my golf shoes along on the off change that I might find the opportunity for a round. We were nearing the end of our trip and that opportunity hadn't yet arisen when my wife told me that she would consider the trip a failure if I didn't play at least one round. So, naturally, I found my way to Braid Hills, rented a set of clubs and set out. I had the good fortune to be hooked with a pair of locals who took me under their wing. While I had never bothered to register an official handicap I would estimate that I would have a tough time making it as a 25. Pretty awful. But these two guys guided me around and told me where to aim and I just hacked away. Scored about 110, if memory serves me right. But I must say that it was the most fun I'd ever had on a gold course. Nothing like the manicured courses that I was used to (I sucked on those courses too!) but this was a unique experience. The views, the hard packed fairways, the hidden greens, the gorse - it was all wonderful. And those two guys I played with were terrific and patient. A fantastic memory that I'll never forget.”
“Great old course bit hilly but playing it well worth it. The views alone worth it As stated hilly walk the course could benefit from some benches at Tees government us a breather”
“If you only have time for one round in Edinburgh and don't want to spend hundreds at a private club, come to the Braids. The views are genuinely world-class—seeing the Castle from the tee box is something else. It’s a tough, hilly walk and the gorse is brutal if you're having a bad day with the driver, but the natural beauty of the place is unbeatable. It’s 'real' golf in a stunning setting. Just make sure you've got your hill-climbing legs on!”
