“Cavendish, the most authentic MacKenzie-designed course in the world and the inspiration for Augusta”
Created by Dr. Alister MacKenzie and opened in 1925, Cavendish Golf Club is one of over 100 golf courses around the world that he helped to design. Particularly notable among these are The Augusta National and Cypress Point in USA, Royal Melbourne in Australia and of course, Cavendish, here in Buxton.
In 1923 the Duke of Devonshire requested MacKenzie to design an 18 hole golf course in Buxton and the link with the Cavendish family has remained to date. The course has retained virtually all of the features present in MacKenzie’s original design, making full use of the natural features and providing a true test for golfers at all levels of ability. Not long by modern standards, it requires accurate play to the demanding greens, which have left many visitors longing for a return to our exciting course.
Cavendish exemplifies MacKenzie’s belief that “length has nothing to do with the quality of a hole”.
The abundance of wildlife such as buzzard, sparrow hawk, kestrel, deer and hares can be a distraction even to the most focused player, but we believe that it adds to the experience of playing in this quiet, private area of Buxton.
The Cavendish Clubhouse offers many amenities including a well-stocked licensed bar and a well-appointed and comfortable lounge with spectacular views over the course from the terrace area. The terrace provides an idyllic haven to relax with a drink after a game and to soak in the scenery. We have excellent catering arrangements and can provide meals from traditional club fare to formal dinner events. Just off the main lounge, we have a separate dining room that can seat 60 comfortably and also a well-appointed members spike bar. The Club has a reputation for being relaxed and friendly, with regular social events for members arranged throughout the year. Members prefer informality as the rule and so smart casual dress is quite acceptable throughout the club.
With ample parking, the clubhouse is a popular venue for private functions particularly wedding receptions and funerals. Our dining room and board room also offer ideal spaces for small business conferences.

“Incredible golf course!!. One of the best courses we have played as a society. The course was immaculate and the hospitality was incredible. Totally understand how Augusta was inspired by Cavendish”
“An amazing course at a reasonable rate. Greens in top condition with lush fairways. Food was served quickly, was tasty and reasonably priced. Loved it so much went back 5 days later.”
“A fantastic day at Cavendish GC. You can really see why this has been an inspiration for Augusta in certain areas of the course. Absolutely stunning views throughout. We were shocked how quiet it was for a mid afternoon tee-time. Bunkers were beautiful, flour like almost. Fairways were well kept and the ball rolled beautifully. The greens were quick (my entire 4 ball doesn’t want to talk about the 3rd green lol). Some tricky par 3s but definitely a nice experience for all golfers. Highly recommend for the price.”
