“Golf has been played on this land since at least 1616. The club itself was founded in 1883, and Old Tom Morris laid out the course in 1886. Over the years, it has been refined by John Sutherland, Donald Ross, and most recently Tom Mackenzie, evolving into the masterpiece it is today. The round begins quietly with a short par 4 opening hole, giving a gentle introduction to the course. However, after walking through a narrow path lined with gorse to the 4th tee, the atmosphere changes completely. It feels as though the course is saying, “Welcome to Dornoch.” From that point onward, the true character of Royal Dornoch unfolds. The breathtaking panorama from the elevated 7th tee, the dramatic right-to-left fall of the fairway on the magnificent 8th hole, and the classic out-and-back routing leading to the 9th all showcase the remarkable use of the site’s natural terrain. The inward nine is equally memorable. The small, demanding green at the 10th, the famous 14th hole “Foxy,” the strategic choices required on the short 15th, the expansive beauty of the 16th “High Hole,” the terrain-driven design of the 17th, and the challenging finishing hole all possess their own distinct character. Around the greens, hollows, ridges, mounds, and natural slopes are blended masterfully, creating endless variety and ensuring that no two holes feel alike. Royal Dornoch is truly one of Scotland’s greatest links courses. Its vast natural landscape, dramatic elevation changes, imaginative hole sequence, and exceptional routing constantly exceed a player’s expectations. Comparisons with Royal County Down, the jewel of Northern Ireland, are inevitable, yet neither course can truly be considered superior to the other. While Royal County Down captivates with its towering dunes and breathtaking scenery, Royal Dornoch’s greatest strengths lie in its seamless integration with the natural landscape, the brilliance of its hole design, and the elegance of its routing. Each offers a unique golfing experience, and together they represent two of the finest links courses in the world.”
