Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club, Southport, United Kingdom
About the club
Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club is a true championship course, with first class facilities to match. The links is set amongst the dunes on the North West coastline and is another of course designer James Braid’s great creations.
S&A (as it is widely and affectionately known), was founded in 1906, part of the great golf boom around the turn of the 20th century. Inevitably the passing of so many years has brought about changes to the course, but the traditional feel of a championship links has been retained.
The club has hosted two Ryder Cup matches in 1933 and 1937 and a number of other prestigious championships including The British Ladies' Open and The British Amateur. It remains a final qualifying course for The Open Championship and it has been voted by one golf magazine as among the top 50 courses in Great Britain.
All of the holes are of championship standard and no two are the same. However, if one had to be singled out it would be the sixteenth. This famous hole has a great hill and bunkers, lined with railway sleepers and is a cunning trap, catching poor second shots. It is called ‘Gumbleys’, after the gentleman who spent some time in there!
The course is a magnificent test of golf, especially with the sea breeze and profusion of heather and gorse combining to provide a challenging and immensely enjoyable day.
The recently refurbished clubhouse (March 2015) also creates a splendid setting for unwinding after a round. The main lounge and patio to the front of the clubhouse provide stunning views across the course, including the 18th green and 1st tee.
Complemented with a warm welcome friendly lounge/bar and exceptional catering, everything is in place for a truly memorable experience.

Golfer reviews
“Played the Green Golf charity event here and was lucky enough to be in the first group so we had the place to ourselves and what a place. The fairways and greens were such and well tended. Not much joy for any wayward drives as the gorse is is merciless. Luckily I managed to avoid the trouble and finished with the ball I started with. The clubhouse was plush and welcoming. Stopped for a soft drink after the round and didn't have time to sample the food but the dishes I saw and smelled being served to others were very appealing especially the fish and chips! Will defo be having that next time!”
“What a great golf course this is. A really tough test of your golfing abilities mixed with a visual feast to seduce you. Looks absolutely fabulous plays absolutely diabolical. Bunkers strewn all over the course to entrap you, greens with more twists and turns than a best selling thriller, heather and long rough to capture your balls and never give up the secrets of where they are hidden and winds to make club selection a lot more interesting Loved it and will be back”
“What a great course! Played in the height of the heatwave and the course condition was absolutely fantastic and a credit to the greens staff. Superb practice facilities with a decent range and top shirt hame practice area. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I can't recommend S&A highly enough!”
