About the club
Towneley Golf Course was originally established in 1932 as 9 hole layout, but was later expanded to the current 5834 yard, par 70 course. Set in mature parkland, Towneley is a good test of golf despite its short length. Well placed hazards and small, fast greens make it a challenge for any ability of golfer. Over the past 10 years our greens staff have improved the course to make it a more challenging test of golf. Certain holes on the front nine have been re-numbered to speed up play. The 3rd now incorporates 2 ponds. Several ditches have been opened to improve drainage, and additional bunkers have been put in. As a result of these changes the course is now in very good condition throughout the year.

“Lived in Burnley for a few years as a young teen and tried playing here sometimes alone, sometimes with my Dad. My incompetence didn’t seem to matter, nor did me having a motley selection of second hand shop clubs. The place (Council owned) felt welcoming and far from the snobby stereotype people sometimes have of golf. I loved the place and - when it wasn’t raining - the magnificent views of Pendle and the Pennines. I never improved much and was happy to plod along, especially on the long par 5 that runs by the drive to Towneley Hall where scores of a dozen were not unknown. So that was 50 odd years ago. My family moved from Burnley and soon after I left home but I always loved coming back here. The then saplings are now fully grown and the course looks better than ever. It is still affordable and welcoming. My brothers and I had a great time and though my score was too high to mention I couldn’t believe that somehow I rode my luck on the long par 5 for a birdie! I can’t recommend this place enough. I hope it’s still here 50 years on and is still council owned.”
