Trump Turnberry’s iconic Ailsa course has been ranked number two in Golf World’s Top 100 Great Britain and Ireland X Factor Courses, with the Ayrshire links singled out in the new bucket list for its unique blend of spectacular setting, dramatic holes and championship heritage.
The ranking celebrates courses that deliver something truly distinctive - the golfing wow factor - and the Ailsa’s renowned stretch along the rugged coastline, framed by the famous lighthouse, continues to define it as one of golf’s most dramatic stages.

The X Factor listing reaffirms its status as one of the most compelling and breathtaking layouts in the game with only Old Head of Kinsale in Ireland edging the list.
Golf World Top 100 editor Chris Bertram said: “If you lean towards enjoying the echoes of history, this might be your X Factor Number One, because the holes around the lighthouse in particular are stunning and you also have the fact it hosted arguably the most iconic championship the game has witnessed. So, add the Duel in the Sun to picture-perfect coastal scenes and you have a majestic number two that certainly would not be out of place one slot higher.”
The coastline stretch has been further elevated through Martin Ebert’s most recent renovation work, an evolution driven by a simple but exacting brief: how to make one of the world’s finest links courses better still.
The par-five seventh now plays as a true coastal dogleg with the green relocated to the very edge of the shoreline with a stunning backdrop of the Atlantic ocean. The neighbouring par-four eighth has been fundamentally reworked, straightened to align with the natural camber and opened up visually from the tee.
These changes form part of a wider programme across the course, where dune shaping, improved sightlines and subtle architectural adjustments have strengthened the playing experience while remaining faithful to its heritage.
The details
The Ailsa course, a four-time host of The Open, is forever linked with the 1977 ‘Duel in the Sun’, widely regarded as one of the greatest championships in golf history as Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus went toe-to-toe. Today, that sense of occasion is matched by a course that continues to evolve, blending tradition with thoughtful modern design.
Nic Oldham, General Manager at Trump Turnberry, said: “The Ailsa has always had a rare ability to leave a lasting impression, but what sets it apart is a willingness to keep improving without ever losing its identity.
“The recent renovation has enhanced some of the most recognisable holes in the game, particularly along the coastline, and elevated the experience for golfers at every level. To see that recognised in a ranking focused on individuality and character is especially meaningful.
“We are proud to offer a course that not only stands among the very best, but continues to move forward.”
Set along the Ayrshire coast, Trump Turnberry is ‘a golfers’ paradise’ offering a complete golfing experience, with the Ailsa complemented by the King Robert the Bruce and short courses alongside a world-class academy and practice facilities within the luxury resort.
This latest accolade further strengthens Turnberry’s reputation as one of the game’s must-visit destinations, where championship golf and coastal scenery combine to deliver something truly enduring.
