Sean Moriarty, CEO of Quinta do Lago, was on hand to receive the accolades and said: “It’s an honour to be recognised at the World Golf Awards once again. Despite enjoying a lot of great success in recent years, the resort is not one to rest on its laurels – we’re always looking to move forward.
“We have taken a lot of pride in making the South Course even better, which makes this recognition even more rewarding. To be named as ‘Europe’s Best Golf Venue‘ also speaks volumes about the fantastic resort that we have become and the array of world-class amenities that we offer to our members and guests in addition to three terrific golf courses.”
This is the second year running that the South Course, an eight-time host of the Portuguese Open, has been named ‘Europe’s Best Golf Course’. In 2020, the layout was the subject of a €7 million upgrade, and winning the award last year was a fitting way to sign off Quinta do Lago’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
The renovation of the South Course, which further highlighted the resort’s commitment to sustainability, encompassed all fairways, bunkers, tees and greens. Improved irrigation and a switch to new species of grass have significantly bolstered water efficiency across the layout, drastically reducing waste in a key area. However, the resort’s two other 18-hole championship golf courses – the North Course and Laranjal – have not been overlooked in the quest for golf’s greener future.
The details
Amplified biodiversity, reduced plastic usage and homegrown fruit and vegetables are among the key concepts implemented throughout all of the resort’s courses, culinary options and accommodation. Quinta do Lago’s reputation as a pioneer in sustainable golf and travel has only been reinforced by the latest awards, which prove that its green approach can offer the same standard of world-class golf and travel that guests have come to expect.
In addition to Quinta do Lago’s three celebrated 18-hole golf courses, the resort is home to the only Paul McGinley Academy in the world. Combined with the state-of-the-art practice facilities, the resort has established itself as the perfect base for Tour players and recreational golfers to hone their skills.
As well attracting golfers, the world-class performance hub, The Campus, is a popular venue for top athletes and sports teams from all over the world. The premier multi-sports facility welcomes residents and guests of Quinta do Lago to enjoy a lifestyle of health, fitness and wellness, and includes a high-performance gym, tennis and padel courts, swimming pool, cycling, group classes and personal training, recovery suites and sports rehabilitation.
Alongside an unparalleled sports offering, guests staying in the 2,000-acre Algarve resort can enjoy 14 first-class bars and restaurants or discover the picturesque Magnolia Hotel.
