Having just picked up the 100th Edition of The Golf Guide, and been a huge admirer of the publication over many years, I thought it appropriate to share how it has been an invaluable companion for over the last 15 years.
My golfing buddy and I embarked on our Spanish odyssey in 2007 and we picked up our first copy of The Golf Guide a year or so later. We had considerable difficulty finding courses in the early years, as there were no road signs back then, and whilst the Guide maps are basic they gave us a chance to find the course without driving round for hours as happened on our first trip trying to Rio Real. In the early years, we would play 6 different courses in the week and then on the last night before drinking too much beer, peruse the Golf Guide for where to play the following year.

The great thing about The Guide is it is none judgemental in its course descriptions and summaries, you the golfer, are left to decide if the course is any good, whether it suits your game and if you will return again. We have played 38 of the courses currently in the Guide, there are only 4 I would never return to: Atalaya (Terrible attitude of staff and put on the wrong course), El Chaparral (Poor layout in very poor condition) Alcaidesa, now renamed La Hacienda ( 5 1/2 hours and still waiting on the 15th Tee and Monte Mayor (Doesn’t matter now as its shut).
Personal Info to give some context: Age: 43 (2007) Handicap 2007: 4 Handicap 2025: 9.7 and rising Best Course: La Reserva Best Value: Calanova and it’s always in great condition Favourite Course: Torrequebrada Lowest Score: 73 at Santana Highest Score: 101 at La Reserva (42 putts) We did play off the Back tees, A 5 putt after knocking in on the 1st in 2 then de greening my first putt. Most Scenic: Alcaidesa Links or Calanova Favourite Hole: 10th at Santana Craziest Hole: 12th at Valle Romano (now the 3rd) front and back 9 have been flipped Hole in One: Sadly none I would like to think I might one day pick up the 200th Edition of The Golf Guide, having met Managing Director Paul, at my club Carus Green a couple of years ago, I’m sure he has plans for another 100. Thank you Paul for the journey we have spent together, though your magazine, all the best for the future.
